Herman Galynin: Complete Works for Strings

The intensity with which the Russian composer Herman Galynin (1922–66) lived his short life is reflected in the extraordinarily high voltage of his music. In spite of a difficult start in life – he was an orphan – his instinctive musicality combined with the impulsiveness of his personality to make him one of the best known of Soviet composers while he was a student. Although mental illness put an early end to his meteoric career, the wild, freewheeling energy of his compositions – as witness these five works for strings – leave little doubt that Galynin would have been one of the major musical voices of the second half of the twentieth century; as it is, what he did achieve is remarkable.

Herman Galynin: Complete Works for Strings

Anatoly Lyadov: Choral Music

Anatoly Lyadov: Choral Music

Lyadov’s handful of orchestral works have become concert favourites, but his choral music is as good as unknown. It falls into three main categories: religious chants, folksong arrangements and original compositions. All three confirm Lyadov’s status as a kind of Fabergé of music: they blend exquisite craftsmanship and delicate beauty.

AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS

17.11.2020

A CD with music by Herman Galynin, released in August this year by Toccata Classics label, was nominated for the most prestigious international award in the field of classical music - International Classical Music Awards (ICMA).

The ICMA Award has been awarded since 2013 for the best achievements in the field of recording and performing academic music. The jury of the award includes music critics and editors of radio stations and music publications from around the world, who determine the nominees, finalists and winners of the ICMA Award in several stages.

This year, at the first stage, the jury selected 365 nominees in 16 nominations from all the releases released over the past year. The disc recorded by the Academy of Russian Music was selected in the nomination "Mixed Program" (because the disc includes orchestral and chamber music), among 29 other candidate discs. Among the rivals of Ivan Nikiforchin, the Academy of Russian Music and its soloists are such world-famous musicians and ensembles as Maris Jansons, Giovanni Antonini, Seiji Ozawa, Marta Argerich, Isabelle Faust, Helene Grimaud, Daniil Trifonov, Boris Berezovsky, Alexander Sladkovsky, Vladimir Yurovsky, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Only 16 releases will be the winners of the ICMA Award, but getting into the ICMA Award nomination is a great achievement for any musician and band.

A disc with music by German Galinin, recorded by the Academy of Russian Music of Ivan Nikiforchin, was named among the "Discs of the Year" on the MusicWeb International portal, one of the most famous and oldest portals where reviews of audio recordings of academic music are published.

Every year in December, this portal asks its reviewers to name the best, from their point of view, CDs released over the past year, reviews of which were published on the portal. Moreover, reviewers can name both the discs on which they themselves wrote reviews, and the discs reviewed by their colleagues.
This year, 28 reviewers published on the portal presented 146 "Discs of the Year", among which the disc of the Academy of Russian Music was named.
